Overview

Born in Colombia in 1965. Juan Mejía studied architecture between 1983 and 1988 and graduated from the UPB in his hometown of Medellin. His career thrives on countless trips and influences as he studied globally. With his international cultural background, Juan Mejía's works share a close relationship with architecture.

Juan Mejía has worked with many mediums, from Sintra, from which he carves his recognizable “Signos” series, to rusted bronze, emblematic of his series of folded sculptures entitled “Origami”.

Juan Mejía's work is of immaterial origin; matter and antimatter duality make up the spirit of this work. It all begins with the construction of its volumes, the perfection and subtlety expressed in cuts and folds, the austerity of the form, the exactness of the line and the color that emerges from the interior of each piece, expanding its luminous aura.

Sacred geometry, the real and the virtual, the simultaneity of their refraction, is the original essence of this work. The synthesis of its elements represents the solidity of matter and  space - time that contains, reflects on their fragility. His structures are made of materials that intrigue us. His futuristic vision speaks to us, where the secrecy of signs and the isolation of secrets reside. His sculptures go as far as the prolongation of the form allows and as far as infinity reflects them.

His sculptures  are polymorphic structures which are originated from intentional lines, accents, rhythms and games of full and empty spaces on the original flat surface. They then become three-dimensional sculptural objects of grand finesse.”
