Robert Goodnough was an American artist associated with the Second Generation Abstract Expressionist group. Price et al. describe how Goodnough's "pluralism of styles reflects both the discipline and control of [Amédée] Ozenfant and the expressiveness of [Hans] Hofmann," whom he studied with in New York (1). In the 1970s Goodnough developed a distinct style which was described by critic Clement Greenberg as "clustered leaf-facets in relation to large areas of unmarked canvas." He writes: "the microscopic spacing of the leaf-facets themselves; their changes of hue and value, their thickened surfaces, which lift from the canvas almost imperceptibly -- that's how some of the best art of our time gets itself made" (2).
