Bright Red Anemones is a choice example of Baynard's keen sensitivity to line and form. Aligning with traditions of Japanese woodblock techniques, Baynard maintained a sustained engagement with flowers, leaves and domestic objects. Jewel-toned hues criss cross to form a vibrant vase, as the anemones gracefully prop upwards. A pronounced stillness structures this composition. Baynard fixes his subject within a shallow, stable pictorial field, eliminating extraneous detail and any suggestion of atmospheric movement.
