A key practitioner of the New Image Movement, Donald Sultan’s new silkscreen Poppies build on the visual language he has been building since the 1970s. Emerging in the late 70s, New Image artists rejected the strict confines of Minimalism and sometimes anti-material concerns of Conceptual art in favour of recognizable forms, in an attempt to transform ordinary subjects into iconographic status. In this silkscreen, Sultan uses simplified shapes, dense black forms, and sharp contrasts to create an image that feels both monumental and immediate. The print medium reinforces the clean edges and repeated visual rhythms associated with advertising and industrial production, while the flocking textures preserve a sense of physical presence.
