Dine has returned repeatedly to the image of the robe throughout his career, making it one of his most personal and enduring motifs. Emerging in the 1960s alongside Pop Art, Dine adopted everyday objects such as tools, hearts, and garments, transforming them into expressive and autobiographical symbols. In his Robe series of prints, the empty garment functions as a surrogate self portrait, suggesting presence through absence and inviting viewers to imagine the figure within. Dine’s engagement with printmaking, often combining techniques such as woodcut, lithography, and intaglio, allows for rich textures, layered colour, and visible traces of the artist’s hand, emphasizing process as much as image. Through printmaking, which transfers ink from a prepared surface onto paper in often limited editions, Dine explores repetition and reinvention, with each robe appearing familiar yet distinct while reflecting an ongoing investigation of identity, materiality, and mark making.
