Cecily Brown British, b. 1969
95.3 x 142.9 cm.
Cecily Brown’s recent edition enters into conversation with The Five Senses, the celebrated allegorical collaboration created in the early seventeenth century by Jan Brueghel the Elder and Peter Paul Rubens. Reimagining the exuberance and sensory abundance of the Baroque through a contemporary lens, Brown layers fragmented forms, gestural marks, and flashes of figuration to evoke the instability of perception and desire. Her silkscreens transform historical references into restless, atmospheric compositions that blur the boundaries between abstraction and representation.
