William Perehudoff was a pioneer of Canadian abstract painting. His flat compositions reflect his engagement with American abstract art and criticism (most notably Clement Greenberg and Kenneth Noland, who he met in 1962/63). This is an exceptional example of the "Perehudoff's stain paintings of the mid-sixties" (Fenton, 1972). His warm tones and large-scale geometric compositions also evoke the "clear light and expansive spaces of Saskatchewan" (Karen Wilkin, 1981).
