The Gathering is based on Mr. and Mrs. R. Padgett, Mr. and Mrs. D. Gallup, a celebrated painting from Alex Katz’s influential series of group portraits created in the 1970s. The work was included in the artist’s major retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2022. Depicting a quiet moment of conversation among friends, the composition reflects Katz’s ability to capture the nuances of social interaction through gesture, expression, and carefully observed relationships.
Significantly, Katz has never before produced a print based on one of his landmark group portraits from the 1970s, making The Gathering a rare opportunity to acquire an edition connected to one of the most important periods of his career.
Measuring more than six feet in width, this monumental silkscreen retains the scale and presence of the original painting while drawing renewed attention to a body of work that helped establish Katz as a leading figure in contemporary American painting.
