In Autumn 4, Alex Katz turns to landscape with the familiar clarity and restraint that define his portraits. Not descriptive in a traditional sense, the work is distilled to a broad plane of rich blue sky and jumping splashes of burnt umber and yellow, just as the leaves turn in for the fall season. Frequently drawn from his surroundings in Maine, the edition is based on a painting of the same title. Appearing more-so as a rhythmic arrange rather than detailed observation, Autumn 4 captures the passing moment and atmosphere with a decidedly distinct style.
