This drawing by Pierre Bonnard depicts a figure seated at a table in an interior space. Bonnard was well-known for his still lifes and domestic scenes, and he returned to the subject again and again throughout his career (e.g. in the drawings Before Dinner ca. 1924 and Woman at the Dining Table, Le Cannet ca. 1943). Bonnard would sketch these scenes from life (Amory, Pierre Bonnard: The Late Still Lifes and Interiors (Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2009), p. 82).

Bonnard often positioned the viewer right at the edge of the table - almost inside the painting. However, the compressed linear perspective flattens the pictorial space and tips the entire scene toward us [see Le Café (1915), Interior: Dining Room (1942-46), and The Breakfast Table (1936)].
