Liepke's early 1982 canvas, The Dressmaker, pays homage to one of his most prudent influences, James McNeill Whistler. In particular reference to a 1871 work, often referred to as the "Victorian Mona Lisa," Whistler’s Mother is one of the most iconic paintings in American art. Officially titled Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, the work reflects Whistler’s belief in "art for art’s sake," focusing on composition and harmony rather than narrative. Liepke addresses similar themes through his gestural figuration nearly a century later.
