Overview
"...Canvases that enveloped the viewer, treating the surface not as a window but as an arena for gesture and presence."
Rukaj Gallery is pleased to present Ten Paintings - an exhibition focusing on large-scale work. The emergence of Abstract Expressionism in the late 1940s marked a turning point in the scale of modern painting. Canvases that enveloped the viewer, treating the surface not as a window but as an arena for gesture and presence. In this new approach, size became a formal element to convey immediacy, intensity, and the physical act of painting itself. A highlight of the exhibition, Larry Poons’ Barcelon (1987–88) represents a significant departure from the precise, optical arrangements that characterized his early work. Towering at eight feet in height, its dynamic surface—composed of cascading paint, fabric, and paper—envelops the viewer in a richly tactile and immersive visual field.
